Hillside Home Cinema

The client wanted a room that could show reference material at reference level — no compromises. We shaped the room acoustically first, then chose speakers and projector to match. A single "Movie" button dims lights, lowers the screen, and picks source.

The Brief

The owner is a film buff and had grown out of a Sonos-and-soundbar setup in the living room. Brief: build a dedicated cinema that a professional colourist would sign off on.

The Build

Acoustics first

Six weeks of acoustic treatment before a single speaker was installed. Modal ringing measured and treated below 80Hz with tuned bass traps.

Dolby Atmos 9.4.6

Three front speakers behind an acoustically-transparent 4.2m Stewart screen. Four surrounds, two rear surrounds. Six overhead height channels. Four dual-opposed subs.

Laser projector, 4K HDR

A Sony VPL-XW7000ES laser projector — 3200 lumens, native 4K HDR — throwing to a 4.2m Stewart CineCurve screen.

One-button experience

The "Movie" scene dims the sconces to 4%, drops the screen, powers up the projector, unmutes the processor and picks the last-used source. Pause the film — sconces fade back to 20%.

The Outcome

  • Reference-level playback measured within ±1.5dB across every seat.
  • Sub-30dB noise floor with the projector running — silent enough for dialogue-heavy films.
  • Owner reports watching more films in the first month than the previous year.
